“Like most spooky lakes, this one is super fucking old. It is the last remnant of an enormous ice age lake called Lake Lahontan, a body of water that took up almost the whole state. Locally, it is known for cutthroat trout fishing and the legend of the WATER BABIES. Water babies are a feature of Great Basin tribal lore - the Paiutes aren’t the only one who believe in them. Water babies can be spirits, supernatural entities, or the ghosts of drowned children, and they are said to haunt and curse bodies of water. Care and ritual are required to appease them when near the water, and avoid being drowned yourself.”

I am sorry I’ve been absent during this, our best and spookiest season. That’s because I’ve been working on defeating the actual Nightmare Before Christmas, the fascist asshole running on a platform to take us back to . . . well, let’s just say the 1940’s. In my previous life I worked in politics, this shit is in my blood and I can’t shake it, especially with so much on the line.

So this year’s Halloween message is TRICK OR TREAT, SMELL MY FEET, VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS OR RISK LOSING THE RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION. Reproductive rights, healthcare, worker’s rights, immigrant rights, and human decency are on the line. I know my feed is leftist and leftist adjacent, so I will say I hear you on some of Harris’ flaws, and some of her policy failures. As women wiser than me have said, you’re voting on the kind of organizing conditions you want moving forward. Harris is the only sane choice.

As for me, I’m pumped for this exceptional woman to win. I think the nation is sick of this deranged, hate filled carnival ride that keeps popping up every 4 years. We want off!!

So please get some fun sized candy, a big old drink, fill out your ballot, and turn that shit in. Do it now just in case something comes up on election day! You never know! At this rate the aliens could decide to come down and take over and we can’t be sitting around filming TikToks of the Close Encounters of the Sixth Kind and forgetting to hit the polling station!! Also!! Take me with you!!

I know this page has been quiet - more on that tomorrow - but in between all of this election chaos, I managed to squeeze in some GHOST AND CEMETERY RELATED WORK because all stopping fascism and no play makes Courtney a DULL FUCKING BOY. So check out this podcast interview with David Dylan Thomas about our favorite hidden hometown graveyard, CITY CEMETERY aka LINCOLN PARK GOLF COURSE.

David’s podcast is in support of his project, White Meat - a movie about zombies who emerge from a hidden African American graveyard in Philadelphia to eat . . . WHITE PEOPLE. I’ve written about this location, now called Washington Square Park, and the incredible and frustrating history it contains. In 1793, Philly was struck by a yellow fever outbreak, carried by white people fleeing the revolution in Haiti. Doctors at the time thought that people of African descent were immune, and convinced free Black people to help in the relief efforts. Of course, they were not actually immune - many died and were buried at what is now the park. They were later attacked by white patricians who fled the city, accusing them of price gouging and negligence. So honestly, why not come back for a little revenge???

These assertions are very obviously not true, but like a lot of urban legends and conspiracy theories, they’re important to investigate. It’s not lost on me that a quarter or so of Americans are eating this shit up with a spoon, and I have some ideas about why. “
