David Lynch was a fucking ICON. As an aspiring filmmaker-poet-artist in my tender 90’s youth, I idolized him. I was so obsessed with Twin Peaks that I made my friends dress up as characters from the show for Halloween. I was Laura Palmer, OBVIOUSLY.

Lynch’s techniques were so colorful and weird and striking. His aesthetic was pitch perfect for California in the 90’s. So much of his style was influential to this project - we could never have the moody, dark ouevre overshone by sun and palm trees that is California Gothic without him. I recently learned that a lot of his work, especially Twin Peaks, was influenced by the Black Dahlia murder, which was in turn theorized to be a product of the surrealist movement. Surrealism undergirds all of his work, and I have a whole new rabbit hole to go down now.

Happy New Year! Tomorrow in the newsletter I have some belated coverage of the mass drone sightings in New Jersey over the Holidays. Was it a bird? a plane? an alien invasion? Iran spies? FUCKING SANTA CLAUS?!

We’ll get into the story and what I think was really going on, as well as what it means for the culture. HINT: Nothing good lol.

Here on the death beat, we think state funeral proceedings are very important. They tell us a lot about how Americans process death, how they mourn, and how they remember. Public rituals allow for collective mourning and reconciliation. Proceedings are designed with citizens in mind.

President Jimmy Carter lived to be 100, which is incredible and I hope he got his GMA shoutout!! He lost his dear wife Rosalynn about a year ago, and he was remarkably public about his hospice journey - something that I appreciated about the man and his family.

The Day of Mourning caps off a week of activities that are part of the official state funeral. First, the dead go on procession - publicly moved between events. Carter was transported by motorcade through his hometown of Plains, GA, while the town churchbells rang.

There, he lay in repose - another element of a state proceeding that allows the public to visit and pay homage to the president. You may have heard this referred to as lying in state, but that is a term of art that applies only to official government buildings. In Carter’s case, he will lie in state at the Capitol.

From GA, he was flown to DC. His body processed first to the US Navy Memorial - Carter was a submariner - and then by horse chaisson to the US Capitol. Tomorrow, he will process to Washington National Cathedral, where his funeral service will be held.

Finally, Carter will be flown back to GA and buried next to his wife. They have simple matching wooden coffins, which I also love. The Navy will perform a flyover in his honor.

As the wheels come off the bus in this country - Trump is already complaining that the flags will be at half mast for his inauguration - I think these rituals become more important. The first President to have a national day of mourning was Lincoln, and that was as much about mourning what had happened to the country as much as it was about the man. We’ve got a lot of grief to process, and Carter’s simplicity and patriotism are a refreshing contrast to Trump’s gold toilet ethos.

Water babies can be spirits, supernatural entities, or the ghosts of drowned children, and they are said to haunt and curse bodies of water. Care and ritual are required to appease them when near the water, and avoid being drowned yourself.”

I am sorry I’ve been absent during this, our best and spookiest season. That’s because I’ve been working on defeating the actual Nightmare Before Christmas, the fascist asshole running on a platform to take us back to . . . well, let’s just say the 1940’s. In my previous life I worked in politics, this shit is in my blood and I can’t shake it, especially with so much on the line.

So this year’s Halloween message is TRICK OR TREAT, SMELL MY FEET, VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS OR RISK LOSING THE RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION. Reproductive rights, healthcare, worker’s rights, immigrant rights, and human decency are on the line. I know my feed is leftist and leftist adjacent, so I will say I hear you on some of Harris’ flaws, and some of her policy failures. As women wiser than me have said, you’re voting on the kind of organizing conditions you want moving forward. Harris is the only sane choice.

As for me, I’m pumped for this exceptional woman to win. I think the nation is sick of this deranged, hate filled carnival ride that keeps popping up every 4 years. We want off!!

So please get some fun sized candy, a big old drink, fill out your ballot, and turn that shit in. Do it now just in case something comes up on election day! You never know! At this rate the aliens could decide to come down and take over and we can’t be sitting around filming TikToks of the Close Encounters of the Sixth Kind and forgetting to hit the polling station!! Also!! Take me with you!!

I know this page has been quiet - more on that tomorrow - but in between all of this election chaos, I managed to squeeze in some GHOST AND CEMETERY RELATED WORK because all stopping fascism and no play makes Courtney a DULL FUCKING BOY. So check out this podcast interview with David Dylan Thomas about our favorite hidden hometown graveyard, CITY CEMETERY aka LINCOLN PARK GOLF COURSE.

David’s podcast is in support of his project, White Meat - a movie about zombies who emerge from a hidden African American graveyard in Philadelphia to eat . . . WHITE PEOPLE. I’ve written about this location, now called Washington Square Park, and the incredible and frustrating history it contains. In 1793, Philly was struck by a yellow fever outbreak, carried by white people fleeing the revolution in Haiti. Doctors at the time thought that people of African descent were immune, and convinced free Black people to help in the relief efforts. Of course, they were not actually immune - many died and were buried at what is now the park. They were later attacked by white patricians who fled the city, accusing them of price gouging and negligence. So honestly, why not come back for a little revenge???
